Session 1: What is Stopping You? Restructuring Negative Thinking

Explore the impact of anxiety and self-doubt on engaging in small talk. Identify cognitive patterns that contribute to small talk anxiety. Utilise cognitive restructuring techniques to challenge negative thoughts and beliefs. Enhance self-esteem and self-confidence through cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy

Understanding the Root Cause:

Before diving into the techniques and skills, it’s crucial to understand the root cause of small talk anxiety. From a CBH viewpoint, we’ll explore past experiences and deep-seated beliefs that might be inhibiting your conversational abilities. Understanding the ‘why’ behind your feelings can be transformative and provides a solid foundation for the subsequent sessions.

Session 2: Controlling Anxiety Through Relaxation Skills Training

Anxiety Reduction: Utilise relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing and progressive muscle relaxation, to help individuals manage anxiety and stress related to social interactions. Hypnosis can also be used to promote relaxation and build confidence.

Mindfulness and Presence: Teach individuals to practice mindfulness to increase their awareness of the present moment. This can help them stay focused and attentive during small talk conversations, improving their ability to listen and respond effectively.

In one of the sessions, participants will be guided through visualization exercises where they’ll imagine themselves confidently engaging in small talk in various scenarios. Note: Each session will incorporate cognitive behavioural hypnotherapy techniques to address confidence, anxiety, and rehearsal, allowing participants to overcome small talk challenges and build strong conversational skills.

Homework and Real-World Practice:

To ensure that skills learned during the sessions are transferred to real-world situations, participants will be given ‘homework’ assignments after each session. These might include initiating a small talk conversation with a stranger or practising active listening with a friend. The subsequent session will begin with a discussion on these assignments, allowing participants to share their experiences and receive feedback.
